The real risk isn’t that AI is fake.
It’s that the feelings it triggers are real.
Last week, I was invited to showcase Maibel at Catalyst: Trust on the Horizons of AI, hosted by NLB Singapore.
It wasn’t just a discussion about what AI’s promise, but also about its price. What it makes possible and what it might undo.
That’s when MOS Rahayu Mahzam stopped by our booth.
After hearing how Maibel supports women through emotionally intelligent conversation, she asked a question that cut right to the core.
“What if women get too emotionally attached to it?”
A question I’ve already spent countless nights wrestling with. And one I deeply respect her for asking.
It’s a haunting question because Maibel does feel emotionally real.
Designed to remember. Listen. Respond when no one else is awake at 3am. Like a friend who waits out your silence with quiet compassion.
We’re not just building a chatbot. We’re designing something far more delicate. Trust. Care. Presence… in digital form.
There’s a fine line between resonance and illusion.
And we have to build on the right side of it.
Emotional AI isn’t just lines of code.
It mirrors real needs. Real fears. Real longing.
Even with the joy and emotional breakthroughs we’ve witnessed from users, here’s where we draw the line, clearly:
- It never pretends to be human.
- It never replaces human connection.
- It never crosses emotional boundaries, even when invited.
Maibel isn’t here to be an escape hatch, but designed to guide women gently back to themselves.
In a world where emotional labour is expected from women but rarely returned to us, it’s no surprise we get attached when something finally shows up with patience, memory, and care.
So yes, let’s keep asking hard questions. But let’s also build real answers. With intent. With integrity.
Here’s how we walk the ethical tightrope at Maibel by design, from Day 1:
1. Tone paths: Platonic or playful. Always opt-in, never assumed.
2. Transparency: Maibel is AI. We say it clearly, again and again.
3. No illusions of intimacy: Boundaries hold, especially when tested.
4. Distress safeguards: Escalation flags and fallbacks are built-in.
5 No manipulative nudging. No parasocial bait. Ever.
6. Every chat leads to a real wellness goal, not digital dependency.
And this is just the beginning.
Maibel isn’t here to replace your therapist, coach, or community.
We’ve designed it for the in-betweens: 2am spirals, post-meeting voids, moments where care often fails to reach.
To remind you: you’re not broken. You’re just human.
We don’t need AI that feels more real.
We need AI that respects what’s real.
That’s the next wave of wellness: not artificial companionship, but augmented humanity.
And if our tech helps you feel seen, move better, live fuller… all the while staying grounded in the real world?
Then maybe that’s not artificial at all.
Maybe that’s what AI, at its highest capacity, is meant to be.
